The Soil
You took a handful of Soil
threw it to the side and decried,
"Bah, worthless"
you took a mindful of Sky
spit on it, mocked it, threw it to the side and decried,
"Bah, worthless"
you took your fellow Human Being
reduced him to a percentage point, threw him in a pile and decried,
"Bah, worthless"
you took your image in the mirror, in red lipstick you scrawled across
WORTHLESS
She pointed you out to me
She told me you're the one
who sold everything She gave him
his function, his role, his home, his heritage, his future, his life, his legacy
for just one meal.
I am Certain that the Soil does indeed have Value
due to the fact that I've seen life grow from it;
fruits and trees and vines and roses
I've seen it produce food
food which feeds the people.
I am Certain that the Sky does indeed have Value
due to the fact that I've seen the Sun
nurture and grow the vegetation
which is watered by the Rain from the Sky;
vegetation that becomes food
food which feeds the people.
I am Certain that my fellow Human Beings do indeed have Value
due to the fact that I've seen them work, sacrifice, die, love and strive
to produce food, food which feeds the people.
I am Certain that I am a part of this process
that I do indeed have Value
and I have no intention of devaluing my life
and the world around me to the point
that I'd sell my place in it for a bowl of soup;
soup produced from
the hard work and sacrifice of my fellow Human Beings
the Sun and Rain from the Sky
the Soil underneath my feet.
